moving to new plymouth
Moving to New Plymouth means relocating to the west coast of the North Island, beneath the 2,518-metre cone of Taranaki Maunga. The city spreads from the volcanic ring plain down to black sand beaches along the Tasman Sea, with a population of 60,000 people where the mountain and ocean meet.

THE MOUNTAIN

Taranaki Maunga sits at the centre of Te Papa-kura-o-Taranaki (Egmont National Park), with 13 entrance points spread around its base. The volcanic cone dominates every view in the region, shaping how people live here, something anyone moving to New Plymouth notices immediately upon arrival.
Suburbs follow the volcanic ring plain that slopes from the national park boundary down to the coast, creating an arc of residential areas that curve around the western and northern flanks. Living within the shadow of this active volcano means geography influences everything from property placement to daily weather.
Bell Block sits 6 kilometres northeast on these slopes, with the SH3 bypass cutting through, while Merrilands occupies the northwestern section closer to town. You can see the mountain from most parts of the city when the clouds clear.
Weather patterns follow the volcanic slopes. Rain shadows form to the south and east, while the western and northern suburbs receive the full force of weather systems rolling in from the Tasman Sea.
The ring plain itself consists of deposits from past eruptions, creating the gently sloping landscape where most residential development occurs.
What 17 Years Moving Auckland Teaches You
What You Can Expect From Easy Move
We get calls every week from people who need movers tomorrow. Same story, they booked someone cheap, got cancelled last night.
Here's what we do differently:

We Show Up + Clear Communication
The biggest complaint about movers is no-shows and then radio silence. We confirm the day before, show up when promised, and keep you updated. Auckland traffic happens, but you'll know what's happening. If were running late you'll get a call.

Auckland Movement Intelligence
17 years driving around Auckland means we know which routes turn into 5 pm parking nightmares. Spaghetti Junction timing matters. Auckland needs smaller trucks. Other Suburbs needs hill planning. This isn't vague local expertise it's actual Auckland knowledge.

We Set Realistic Timelines
We don't promise perfection because that's marketing nonsense. Moving involves traffic and unexpected challenges. Wednesday and Thursday evenings have the worst Auckland traffic. We give honest timeframes and won't overpromise.
Furniture Removals Auckland Services
We handle residential and commercial furniture removals across Auckland and throughout the North Island. Here’s what we can help with:
Senior Movers
Furniture moving for older adults and families arranging downsizing, retirement village moves, or relocations. We handle lifting, transport, and placement.

Events Movers
Transport and handling for event equipment, display materials, and exhibition setups, including scheduled pack-in, on-site placement, and pack-out after the event.

Apartment Movers
Tiny studio or multi-level unit, we know the drill. Limited lift access, narrow stairwells, building managers who need paperwork — we’ve seen it all and we’ll handle it. Whether you’re three floors up in a walk-up or dealing with strict building rules about move times, we’ll work around it and get you sorted.

Office Movers
Moving offices doesn’t have to mean losing business days. We can schedule your move for evenings or weekends so you lock up Friday and walk into a ready-to-go office Monday morning. From desks and filing cabinets to IT gear and meeting room furniture, we’ll shift your small to medium office.

Long Distance Movers
Moving from Auckland to Hamilton, Tauranga, Taupo, Rotorua, Whangarei, or New Plymouth? We do long-distance moves throughout the North Island regularly. The further you’re going, the more planning matters, we’ll work out the logistics, coordinate timing, and make sure everything arrives safely.

Packing Services
Some people love packing, and most people hate it. We offer full packing for everything you own, partial packing if you just want us to handle the fragile or valuable stuff, or you can do it all yourself. Full packing means we show up with materials and pack the lot. Partial means you do the easy stuff, we handle the breakables.

WINZ Approved Movers
Easy Move Furniture Removals Auckland is WINZ-approved, which means Work and Income clients can use their assistance payments to cover moving costs. You’ll need a written quote from us for WINZ approval before the move happens, and we’ll sort that for you. It’s all above board and straightforward, just let us know you’re using WINZ assistance.

Moving Helpers
Need movers to help load your truck, move furniture around the house, or handle an internal house move? Our moving helpers are actual movers, not just regular labourers, so they know how to shift heavy stuff safely. Same hourly rates as our truck moves. Perfect if you’ve got the vehicle sorted but need the muscle and know-how.

Storage
If your move-in date doesn’t line up with your move-out date, or you’re downsizing and need somewhere for your stuff, we partner with secure local storage facilities. Short-term or long-term options available. We can move your gear into storage and then deliver it when you’re ready. Saves you making two trips and dealing with storage logistics yourself.

Additional Services
Give us a call or fill out the online form with your move details. Where you’re moving from and to, rough idea of how much stuff, any tricky access like stairs or tight parking. Our pricing covers the truck, the team, and the time. If you’re using WINZ assistance, let us know upfront so we can provide the written quote you’ll need for approval.
We’ll lock in your moving date. Peak times like end of month and weekends get busy, so booking ahead helps. We’ll confirm everything with you a few days before the move, timing, team size, any special requirements. For moves needing ferry bookings (Waiheke, Russell, Great Barrier Island), we sort those reservations once your date is confirmed. If you need packing supplies or our packing service, we’ll arrange delivery or schedule the packing team.
Use smaller boxes for heavy stuff like books, bigger boxes for lighter items like bedding. Don’t overfill boxes or they’ll break apart when we’re moving them. Label everything clearly so we know which room it goes to at the other end. If you’ve booked our packing service, we’ll handle this for you. Empty drawers need to come out of furniture, beds usually need to be pulled apart, and anything fragile should be wrapped properly. On moving day, clear the hallways and doorways so we can work efficiently.
We’ll show up at the agreed time with the right-sized truck and team for your move. The crew will load everything carefully, using blankets and straps to protect your furniture in transit. If something needs to be disassembled, we’ll handle that. The move time depends on how much you’re moving and the access at both ends, stairs, long carries, tight corners all add time. For long-distance moves, we’ll coordinate timing for delivery. At the destination, we’ll unload everything into the rooms you’ve specified and reassemble what we took apart.
Once everything’s unloaded and assembled, you’re good to go. For moves using our storage service, just let us know when you want your stored items delivered and we’ll schedule that. Any issues or concerns, give us a call straight away.
Payment on completion. We accept cash, bank transfer, or Visa.

The 13.2km Coastal Walkway and Surf Highway 45
The Coastal Walkway runs 13.2 kilometres from Port Taranaki at the western end through to Bell Block Beach in the east. It connects the city’s main surf breaks and beach suburbs along the route.
Fitzroy Beach sits at the northern end known for hollow waves and hosting national surfing competitions. The walkway passes the Wind Wand sculpture, Te Rewa Rewa Bridge, and multiple access points to the CBD.
Whether you’re cycling from Bell Block or walking from Fitzroy township, you’re within minutes of this coastal path. Surf Highway 45 extends 105 kilometres south from the city to Hāwera, following the coastline past Oakura (15 minutes south) and numerous surf breaks including Stent Road and Kumara Patch.
The highway curves around the base of Taranaki Maunga, with the mountain visible from most points along the route. The combination of west coast swell and volcanic geography creates consistent surf conditions throughout the year.
Pukekura Park sits inland from the walkway. The 52 hectares of gardens and bush have Garden of National Significance status.
Bell Block, Fitzroy, and Merrilands
NEW PLYMOUTH SUBURBS
Bell Block has grown steadily over the past decade, with subdivisions adding to the established housing stock northeast of the city centre. The SH3 bypass connects Bell Block to central New Plymouth in under 10 minutes, and the Coastal Walkway extends from the suburb’s beach back toward town. People moving to New Plymouth often settle in Bell Block for the newer housing and proximity to both the airport and northern employment zones.
Summerset retirement village opened at Pohutukawa Place in 2023, bringing 300 residences to the area. Bell Block offers the Taranaki Velodrome and cycle park, and sits close to both the airport and northern industrial zones.
Fitzroy runs along the coast at the northern edge of the city, with direct beach access and proximity to New Plymouth Boys’ High School and Girls’ High School. The suburb developed around the beach and surf club, with housing ranging from older homes built in the 1950s and 1960s to newer builds within walking distance of the Coastal Walkway.
Merrilands occupies the space between Fitzroy and the city centre, with Mangorei Road running through the suburb and providing access to Mangorei Primary School. Properties here sit close to both beach access and central amenities, though housing stock varies from established family homes to recent developments.
Vogeltown and Westown form the southeastern and southwestern residential areas respectively. Both sit within cycling distance of the CBD and close to intermediate schools.

West Coast Rainfall and the Tasman Sea
New Plymouth receives year-round rainfall, with the city recording around 1,400mm annually, less than the 8,000mm that falls on North Egmont at altitude, but noticeably wetter than eastern North Island locations. West coast weather patterns bring systems directly from the Tasman Sea with wind and rain throughout all seasons.
The oceanic climate keeps temperatures moderate. Summer highs reach 20-22°C while winter lows drop to around 9°C at night, rarely approaching freezing.
The region averages 2,200 sunshine hours per year, concentrated in summer months from December to February when days extend beyond 14 hours. UV strength exceeds Mediterranean locations due to New Zealand’s position and clearer southern hemisphere atmosphere.
Wind comes consistently off the Tasman, particularly affecting the Coastal Walkway and western-facing properties. Rain patterns show slightly drier conditions in summer, though no month qualifies as dry-July typically receives the most rainfall at around 194mm.
The mountain creates localised weather effects. Cloud formation around the summit indicates incoming systems.
Four-and-a-Half Hours South from Auckland
The drive from Auckland to New Plymouth covers 360 kilometres via State Highway 1 through the Waikato, then west on State Highway 3 through Waitomo and the central North Island. The journey takes four-and-a-half hours without stops, passing through Hamilton at the 90-minute mark before the road turns west toward the coast. Easy Move Furniture Removals handles the full Auckland to New Plymouth route, with experience in the timing and logistics of this intercity relocation.
One toll applies, the Northern Gateway just after leaving Auckland, with the remainder of the route toll-free. State Highway 3 becomes the main connection between New Plymouth and the rest of the North Island, running south through Stratford to Whanganui and north through Te Kuiti back to Hamilton.
InterCity buses run daily between Auckland and New Plymouth via Hamilton, taking approximately 6 hours 49 minutes with the Hamilton transfer. New Plymouth Airport offers domestic flights, though Auckland remains the nearest international gateway. For household relocations, moving to New Plymouth from Auckland by road remains the most practical option for transporting furniture and belongings.
The city’s position on the west coast means it sits off the main north-south corridor, you travel to New Plymouth rather than through it. This isolation from major routes contributes to the region’s distinct character, with Taranaki feeling separate from the central North Island volcanic plateau and the main population centres along State Highway 1.
The Forgotten World Highway (SH43) provides an alternative route through the back country to Taumarunui. This winding road adds time and requires careful driving through remote farmland.
