Packing has to be done with a lot of meticulousness and care, or the chances of furniture getting damaged during transport are very high. Your fine home furnishings such as beds, tables, or sofa sets are quite delicate.
Here are some tips that can help you in packing your fine home furnishings.
Develop A Packing Strategy
Developing a packing strategy will reduce a lot of hassles. It will come in handy while moving large and heavy pieces of furniture. Always try to make note of the following things
Make a list of each type of furniture and the number of pieces of each type. This will help you to quickly determine if any of your furniture is missing once your cargo has been unloaded at the destination. Preparing an inventory of your furniture will also help you to figure how different pieces have to be packed and what kind of packing material is needed.
Keep in mind how you want your furniture to be arranged in your new home. Having a floor plan of your new home with you will help you to decide where and how to place each piece of furniture. Once you have an idea, it will be easier to direct movers and will help you to be prepared in case you find any of your furniture won’t fit in through the doors.
Another important task is to take accurate measurements of your furniture to avoid your furniture from being pushed and pulled unnecessarily due to lack of space. Measure doorways and hallways so that you can move your furniture easily. Proper measurements will also indicate which pieces fit better in a space.
Once proper measurements have been taken, collect the different types of packaging material needed and make sure there is enough, so that you don’t run out of supplies in the midst of packing. Also, make sure you have supplies such as packing tapes, labels, markers, scissors, and blades
Packing Your Fine Furniture
Before you start packing, clean your furniture and remove everything stored in dressers and drawers to make it lighter.
If your furniture consists of detachable parts, be careful and follow the instructions for disassembling carefully. Pack and label all the parts and make an inventory of all the disassembled parts. Make a careful note of how and where each part should go. This will prevent any confusion when reassembling your furniture. Keep screw, nails, Allen keys, hinges, and any other components safely. Detach all the parts and pack them a couple of days before moving if possible, This will allow you to pack and store away the furniture in the proper way. While using power tools such as drills, do so with extreme caution or you will end up damaging your furniture. Wax wooden furniture as it will help to prevent the furniture from getting scratched.
While packing, make sure all surfaces of the furniture are well-covered and cushioned to protect them from any damage during, loading and unloading. Thick blankets and fabrics can be used to provide a cushioning effect. Protruding parts and sharp edges must be packed using bubble wraps. Use packing tape to tightly secure the packing material around your furniture. In order to prevent your furniture from getting dusty or dirty during transportation, make sure to use packaging materials such as shrink wraps and while wrapping, leave some space. These spaces will act as air holes and allow air to circulate and prevents moisture from building up on your furniture. Corners should be covered with corrugated cardboard for safety.
If your furniture consists of glass parts, it should be cushioned well-enough to withstand vibrations and shock that might occur at the time of transportation. Package glass parts with plenty of bubble wrap and packing blankets. Sandwich the glass between two layers of corrugated cardboard and secure it well. While packaging wooden surfaces, pad with paper first. Packing such surfaces directly with plastic wraps can cause moisture to accumulate underneath the wrap thereby damaging the wood.
Precautions While Loading
Before loading your furniture into the truck, line the floor with thick blankets or mattresses to protect your furniture from any impact.
When loading the furniture, get the heavy furniture like sofas, beds, dressers, and dining tables in first and move them to the back of the moving truck. Try to pack your furniture into the truck so that it does not move about but do not pack too much furniture into the truck to prevent the risk of parts scraping against each other and breaking. Secure your furniture so that it stays steady. It is always a good idea to hire professional movers and packers if you can. They will take care of your furniture and make sure it arrives at your new home safely.
