You’ve found the perfect home and you can’t wait to move in. You dream of all the ways you’re going to decorate your new house, how you’re going to place your furniture and arrange your rooms. You hire a moving service and everything is all fine and dandy until you realize – you have to pack! Sure you can hire an additional service of packing from your movers, but if you are not ready to pay an extra amount for this, you’ll have to do the packing on your own. In case this is your situation, do not worry. Packing can be a pain, but with these Packing Tips we’re giving you, you’ll be done with packing all your belongings and moving into your new home in no time!
- 1) Pack an overnight bag of absolute essentials
You probably won’t have the chance to get all your boxes unpacked once you move into your new home. You might be too tired or you simply won’t have enough time. So make sure to pack a bag of everything you will need on your first night including a change of clothes, toiletries, and phone and laptop chargers. You can also carry your laptop itself instead of packing it along with other items in the moving truck. This will prevent it from getting scratches and other damages and will ensure it’s not stolen.
- 2) Pack according to room
While packing, make sure that you do not mix items from different rooms in the same box. Packing items according to which room they belong to or will end up in once you move into your new home will save you a lot of time and trouble while unpacking and arranging. While some people prefer to pack by category, and not by room, packing according to the room in which your items belong makes a lot more sense, saving you from unpacking related hassles.
- 3) Use the right size box for different items
Pack heavier items like books in smaller boxes. Using large boxes for heavy items tend to get way too heavy and this is also a common complaint from moving services. There is also a bigger chance of boxes breaking and items getting damaged. Use larger boxes to pack smaller and lighter items like towels, pillows, clothes, sheets, etc. This will make the job for movers much easier and more efficient.
- 4) Label each box
There is no harm in labelling all your boxes with the contents of the box and also which room they are destined to go to. This will make unpacking much easier for you and will save you a ton of time. Remember to label them on the sides and not on top of the boxes. This will help you identify the contents even if your boxes are stacked. If you feel like taking your organizational skills a notch higher, then you can even number all your boxes. You can make a list of which items are in which number boxes. This will help you make sure you don’t leave behind anything.
- 5) Use a clear plastic box to pack everything you’ll need first
Packing everything you’ll need right away as soon as you move in like sheets, shower curtains, soaps and shampoo, toilet paper, box cutters, knives, scissors, snacks, coffee mugs, utensils and dishware will help you unpack easier and faster. Having these items within easy reach will also help you make your new house feel more like home. Plus, the clear box will easily stand out among all other cardboard or wooden boxes.
- 6) Wrap breakables with clothes
Fragile items like dishware, glassware and showpieces can be wrapped not only using bubble wraps and packing paper but using your own clothes and blankets too! This tip is extremely efficient because you get to pack two things in one. Wrap your dishes and glasses with your blankets, stuff down the sides of your boxes with old clothes. Just remember to wrap them all separately to ensure that they do not clank against each other and are fully cushioned.
- 7) Make use of laundry baskets and suitcases
This too means hitting two birds with one. Pack your laundry baskets, bins and suitcases with clothes, shoes, towels and other items. This way, you don’t have to break your head over how to pack them. If you happen to have suitcases with wheels, you can even use them to pack heavier things like books. This makes your work as well as the mover’s work a lot easier.
Following these Packing Tips will make your move a lot smoother.
